Course Overview

This course is essential in gaining a working knowledge of failure avoidance.

It covers the various mechanisms that cause Drill String to fail, based around the following five areas:

  • Properties

  • Rig Operations

  • Inspection

  • Design

  • Environment

We will discuss symptoms and causes, along with analysing photographs of the various type of failure. Candidates are challenged to review Case Histories, identifying the root cause/s either working on their own or part of a small team and then present and discuss their findings.

Audience

Well Engineers and Senior members of the rig team. It is also recommended for anyone who works in the supply chain for equipment used in a well.

Outcome

At the end of the course, candidates will have a solid grasp of the characteristics and causes of a range of failure types and be able to identify the principal failure mechanisms as well as having an understanding of the relevant factors that could contribute to these. Participants should also be able to apply a systematic methodology to investigate failures to identify the root cause(s). Additionally, the course content supports participants in building their understanding of both failures and failure prevention, in order to make more informed decisions in areas such as procurement, inspection, string design and the handling and operation of the drill stem.
